SITDOWN: MAYBELLE PETERS

Maybelle Peters made We Deh Here as part of a residency with Alchemy Film & Arts in 2024 – 2025. The film and exhibition traces connections between the artist’s mother’s maiden name, Scotland, and the histories of colonialism embedded within it.

Here, to accompany the first public iteration of We Deh Here at Alchemy Film and Moving Image Festival 2025, Maybelle sits down with artist filmmaker and Alchemy Trustee Rhea Storr to discuss the processes of making We Deh Here and the themes it investigates.

We are also pleased to have commissioned a new essay in connection to the film by Dr David Alston, author of Slaves and Highlanders.

Programme notes on the film by Alchemy Director Michael Pattison accompany its Festival exhibition.

Sitdown is an Alchemy Film & Arts series of artist interviews, published to complement its exhibitions, residencies, and other events. You can find all other Sitdown entries here.
