The Artificial Forest
Catriona Gallagher began a residency with Alchemy Film & Arts in August 2026, working towards the completion of The Artificial Forest, a film project which began in and around Kielder Forest, Northumberland, in 2020. Using walking conversations with ecologists, foresters, conservationists, farmers, historians and campaigners, the project explores speculative narratives, Sitka spruce monocultures, rewilding projects, new technologies for forestry management and non-human Others in the forestry plantations around the English-Scottish border.
Catriona Gallagher
Catriona Gallagher is a visual artist using moving image, installation and plant-based research to probe at the collision of manmade and natural worlds. Homing in on overlooked details, her works pull at the threads of ecological entanglement to shed light on more-than-human relations situated in place.
Recent exhibitions include Sea Garden at EMST National Museum of Contemporary Art Athens (2025-26); Roma, a Portrait at Palazzo Esposizioni (2023); solo exhibition Sketches for an Artificial Forest at Roscommon Arts Centre (2023); On the Meaning of Gossip at the British School at Rome (2023); Full Circle (2025) and Entwined (2021) at Visual Arts in Rural Communities; and solo exhibition the Plant in the City (2018) at A – DASH project space, where she was a co-founding member.
Her films have screened at festivals including Melbourne International Film Festival, DokuFest, Alchemy Film and Moving Image Festival, Thessaloniki International Documentary Festival, London Short Film Festival, Ann Arbor Film Festival, and the International Film Festival Rotterdam where she won the KNF award in 2024. Catriona is an Onassis AiR Fellow.
