The Hawick Pictorial was an annual snapshot capturing events of public interest, presented in chronological order, made between 1965 and 1980 by Hawick Film Group. A group of amateur cineastes formed as the cine-arm of Hawick Camera Club, HFG made Sons of Heroes in 1964, and with proceeds from screenings of that film were able to convert a former sweetie shop into a 42-seat cinema on Croft Road, which still operates today.
The 1966 Pictorial features footage of Teviotdale Harriers at Hawick Mair; the general election (candidates: Ian McIntyre (Conservatives), Colin Lindsay (Labour) and David Steel (Lib Dem)); Gerry Marsden and the Pacemakers at Hawick Town Hall with Carol and the Citizens; the Flying Scotsman at the railway station; Joogly Bridge old and new; the new road being constructed at Wilton Hill; old prefabs and new housing at Silverbuthall; St Mary’s Loch sailing club; a Landrover rally at Dodburn; the Common Riding (Cornet Carswell Imrie); the Army at Volunteer Park; Barnardo’s Pete at Balcary; the British Legion Flower Show; Demolition of Dickson Street; Hawick Theatre Group’s presentation of This Happy Breed; Christmas tree at Tower Knowe; a fancy dress party at the Town Hall; a snowy Christmas Day.
The 1966 Pictorial was filmed on 8mm. Editing and sound by Scott Renwick and Andy Rutherford. Directed by Shirley Laing. Narrated by James Palmer-Douglas.
