A wordless discourse begins this theory, but your clothes keep dragging you back. Then a movement of fire and light is frozen in time, could it be a divine disease? A fable of water nymphs merges to red, an inverted landscape mirrored in mind, as a child comes into the world, seeing its first glimmers of light. The discarded is metamorphosed, while electric earth shimmers in an uncanny monochrome land. The Queen of Cups finds her Queen of Hearts, an escalator takes you on an ascension into light. Finally, from among the
weeds, you might not want too much red luck in your dream.

Josh Weissbach/Greece 2013/00:05:46/European premiere
A Greek man, once a guide on the island of Delos, started discussing what the word theory meant. Our ensuing conversation was the initial inspiration for this film, entitled theoria [theh-oh-ree-ah].
Biography/Filmography:
Josh Weissbach is an Associate Lecturer of Film at the the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. He has received his Master of Fine Arts from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, as well as his Bachelor of Arts from Hampshire College. He is co-curator of Microlights, a micro-cinema specializing in avant-garde film and video based in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He has shown his 16mm films and digital videos in festivals both domestically and internationally. These festivals include $100 Film Festival, Alchemy Film and Moving Image Festival, Ann Arbor Film Festival, Australian International Experimental Film Festival, Berlin International Directors Lounge, Cannes Film Festival, Experiments in Cinema, Onion City Experimental Film and Video Festival, and The International Experimental Cinema Exposition.

I remember my dreams by the colour they are…
Maria Magnusson/Sweden 2010/00:04:16/United Kingdom premiere
The starting point and inspiration for this work is Delia Derbyshire’s radioshow for BBC “Inventions for Radio: Dreams” 1964, where different people describe how they remember their dreams in colours. The stories that are edited together into a rhythmic flow has been combined with a collage of several homemade black & white oilslide projections, and snapshots from inherited family slides from the sixties.
Biography/Filmography:
Maria Magnusson completed a Master’s degree in Photography and a Bachelor’s degree in Art History and Theory at the Göteborg University in Sweden. Her practice is strongly influenced by photographic tradition and she works both still and moving images, sometimes combining them. She is also interested in experimentations with sound, having collaborated on several projects with DJ Bruce Leenus. Magnusson has exhibited at dOCUMENTA (13) (Kassel, Germany), Jihlava Documentary Film Festival (Czech Republic), The Images Festival (Toronto, ON) and the Antimatter Film Festival (Victoria, BC). Pabay

An experimental short film exploring the meditative qualities of movements in fire and light. Filmed on the Isle of Pabay, a remote island on the West side of Lewis, Outer Hebrides.
Biography/Filmography:
Mhairi is in her final year at Edinburgh Napier University. Although focusing her studies on photography, she has also experiments in moving image and film.

Lunaticus
Marissa Viani Serrano/France 2013/00:02:20/United Kingdom premiere
Lunaticus explores the concept of the divine disease with the technical and formal resources of digital video and experimental film. In the Middle Ages, the divine disease was known as a form of neurological or psychiatric disorder and took its name from certain symptoms that the patients suffered in a state of crisis. These symptoms were associated with involuntary body movement, heightened sensitivity and clarity of thought. Together they caused a state of altered reality in the patient that led him into a mystical or divine experience. Lunaticus focuses on recreating this type of sacred approach with a stylized montage of original and processed images and sounds.
Biography/Filmography:
Marissa Viani Serrano was born in Mexico City. She studied Philosophy at Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México and Filmmaking at Centro de Capacitación Cinematográfica. As director she has made fictional, documentary and experimental short films. Her work has been exhibited at galleries and film festivals in Greece, Syria, Italy, France, Spain, Poland, Germany, U.K. Morocco, Mexico, Chile, Peru, USA, Australia, Japan, China, India, Singapore and South Korea.

Pierre and Jean Villemin work together since 2002. Jean Villemin is an artist. Awarded state commissions of the Ministry of Culture, Foundation of France. Prize-winner of several sculpture competitions. Works in FRAC for Alsace and Particular collections. Pierre Villemin teaches video at the Fine Art School of Metz. Since 1999, he directed about ten short films diffused and awarded in many International Festivals. Mémoire carbone command of the mine of coal’s museum of Wendel. He developed a poetic and experimental writing on the last mine of coal in Lorraine (eastern France). He is in charge of Les Yeux de l’Ouïe a screening venue network for visual art and sound in Lorraine.

The Whole Bit

“The Whole Bit” synthesizes numerous layers of audio and video as a way to interrogate the way we conceive, perceive, and live in space and time. Light, shadows, and movement are cast by elements in the natural environment, combined with disoriented narration broken from a lecture by Alan Watts, and processed within reverberating cascades of audio as the viewer peels back layers of the unnerving, unsettling, and anxious scene that is unfolding. In an effort to sense “the whole bit” by uncovering what lies beyond space, the narrator questions our perceptions of the landscape as he guides us with echoes of “do you see?”
Biography/Filmography:
Alex Ingersoll is Assistant Professor of Media Studies and Production at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. His research and creative interests involve technologies of spatial representation, orientation, and navigation. His recent work deals with a media archaeological account of orientation and navigation technologies as a way to analyze their contributions to the social imaginations of space and to map new terrain for digital media culture.

‘Deep, Beneath, Within’

‘Deep, Beneath, Within,’ is a collaborative artist’s video production that responds to the darker aspects of landscape. Looking beneath and outside of the normal levels of perception to uncover an emotive and deeper subliminal response to the land.
Biography/Filmography:
Kyra Clegg and Su Grierson are visual artists with independent practices that utilise various media including video and sound works. In 2010 they came together as Black Tent Video showing their individual works in linked programmes. In 2012 they embarked on their first genuinely collaborative project related to Scottish Landscape. Their current work ‘Deep,Within,Beneath’ is the first joint work within this project. A further work ‘Forcefields’ looking at invisible forces in landscape is currently in progress. First Light on South Street

The first weeks with our newborn twins, getting used to waking up early, the new sounds in the house, imagining the world through their eyes. Prompted by Bartók’s études – Mikrokosmos, book 1. This is the third installment in a series of films that explore the structures and strategies of short musical forms from the late 19th and early 20th century as inspirations for the cinematic treatment of personal experiences.
Biography/Filmography:
Paul Turano is an award winning visual artist whose work in film and video has been presented throughout Europe, Asia, Australia and North America. Based in Boston, he has presented his work at the HFA, the Institute of Contemporary Art and The Museum of Fine Arts and his films have been screened in over 50 national and international film festivals. His work explores our relationship to natural environments in both local and global ways.

E215. is a meditative insight into my gran mother as she reflects on her old age. The film is an experimental documentary highlighting that beauty can still be obtained from objects once seen as unfit for society.

TURNS

Turnovers of the Earth create life electricity. Rotating the Earth finds force throwing out it from heart on the soil surface, infinitely moving coverlet of electricity. Making different doses, stimulating-feeding life, and killing – deadly. Immersing of the spectator in a pure landscape, in the image with absence of any social knots for creation of direct dialogue the earth (life) – the person (spectator), where danger, loneliness, the catalepsy, unstable soil underfoot the basic palette of emotions reminding of unsteadiness of everyone living and the world as a whole.

Anningella Queen of Cups
Martha Jurksaitis/United Kingdom 2013/00:08:46/United Kingdom premiere
A Super 8 film processed and edited by hand, inspired by my explorations of the Tarot card the Queen of Cups, and a dream in which a friend told me I am the Queen of Hearts. I discovered that the two Queens are in fact two sides of the same archetype, and she is associated with the water signs of the zodiac – Cancer, Scorpio, and Pisces. I am a Cancer sun with Scorpio rising, and the friend who spoke to me in my dream is a Pisces. I shot the film at Spurn Point, where the Humber River meets the North Sea.

Martha Jurksaitis is an analogue film alchemist based in Leeds, and the founding director of Cherry Kino, an artist-led initiative promoting analogue film as an art form. She works primarily with Super 8 and 16mm cine film and analogue photography, and chemically processes and treats her films by hand.

Red Luck

The rain has ended and something bad is blowing in the wind. It’s not a good day to go around looking for love. Weeds are growing everywhere, the sun is setting and Red Luck is coming. You had better do the things that you dream. Characters physically change and audience perceptions of characters change in this experimental narrative adapted from one of the filmmaker’s most vivid dreams in recent memory.
Biography/Filmography:
Mike Olenick lives in Columbus, Ohio. He has screened work in the Ann Arbor Film Festival, World Wide Video Festival, VIPER Basel, New York Underground Film Festival, Brooklyn Underground Film Festival, EXiS, Oberhausen Film Festival, International Short Film Festival Hamburg, Seattle International Film Festival, Chicago Underground Film Festival and on Dutch television. He is an editor in the Film/Video Studio Program at the Wexner Center for the Arts, where he has worked on projects for Guy Maddin, Michael Robinson and Jennifer Reeder among others. He received his MFA in Photography from the Cranbrook Academy of Art.
