CAFE TISSARDMINE
Alchemy Film & Arts produced three artist residencies at Cafe Tissardmine, on the edge of the Moroccan Sahara, between 2017 and 2018. Led by Dr Richard Ashrowan, Alchemy’s founder and former Creative Director, the residencies provided a supportive environment for artists to develop skills and knowledge in experimental film and artists moving image practice.
Closely integrated with the fascinating local Berber culture, Cafe Tissardmine is close to the Erg Chebbi dunes of the Sahara. The dry, minimal and endlessly extensive landscape offered the twenty one artists who took part in these residencies an opportunity for reflection, supportive dialogue through peer sharing, and a platform at Alchemy Film and Moving Image Festival.
Through a series of tutorial-based discussion sessions and screenings of key works, each residency explored different approaches to artists’ film from historical to contemporary perspectives, and facilitated ongoing creative dialogue between filmmaking, film watching, and the stunning environment of the desert landscape itself.
