JOIN ALCHEMY’S BOARD OF TRUSTEES
Do you want to see change within the arts sector? Alchemy Film & Arts are looking for committed and engaged individuals to join our Board of Trustees who can bring new perspectives to our organisation. Alchemy Film & Arts is a values-driven organisation that centres social justice, wellbeing and creativity at its heart, and seeks to produce the very best in local and international film and arts.

WHY BECOME A TRUSTEE?

  • To gain insight into how cultural organisations operate and change them for the better
  • To develop professionally
  • To grow your networks and contacts within the film and arts sector
  • To contribute to the sustainable development of a respected arts organisation in the Scottish Borders

WHO ARE WE LOOKING FOR?
We are looking for people who believe that art can help make the world better and welcome applications from candidates who have no experience at Board level. We recognise that many representatives of our wider community have been excluded from such opportunities in the past and want to change this. We are particularly (but not exclusively) looking for candidates who are:

  • aged 16 – 25, and/or
  • people of colour, and/or
  • local to Hawick, and/or
  • have insight into HR or legal realms

We are actively looking to improve representation within our organisation. Our board currently represents a limited range of lived experiences. We want our organisation to reflect the diversity of society at all levels, and for that reason we would also particularly welcome applicants with experience of living with a disability, lived experiences of LGBTQ+ issues, applicants who have experienced racism, individuals from a low-income socioeconomic background, and individuals across a variety of age ranges. We do not expect or require you to share this information in your application, but your insight on this would be invaluable.

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE A TRUSTEE?
Very generally, a Trustee’s job is to give your opinion and insight about your life or work experiences so that the Directors of the organisation can make reasonable decisions about the management of the charity. We would provide mentorship and support anyone new to these duties. In a more formal definition, Trustees offer expertise, strategic guidance and legal oversight to support the organisation’s core team and the organisation to function effectively, as well as ensure that financial reporting requirements are met, support fundraising and serve as public advocates. The role of Trustee is voluntary and unpaid, but reasonable expenses can be claimed (for example, to cover travel or accommodation costs to attend a meeting).

HOW MUCH WORK DOES THIS ENTAIL?
Our Trustees attend between four and six meetings a year, and you’d be required to read and reflect on reports beforehand. While we expect at least some of these meetings to take place in person, we are open to recruiting Trustees living outside of Scotland and expect to continue offering virtual participation in meetings beyond current COVID-19 restrictions. We also aim to offer additional  adaptations (such as live captioning or BSL) if required.

HOW TO APPLY

  • Please submit a brief statement (maximum one page A4) or a short video recording (maximum five minutes) that outlines the reasons why you are interested and what you would bring to the role
  • Please send applications (and/or any questions) to Anthony Schrag, Chair of Alchemy Film & Arts, to recruitment@alchemyfilmandarts.org.uk.
  • Deadline: Saturday 30 July 2022, 5pm
