“Hidden Frequencies” is a cinematic/performative work engaging with the history of communication technologies. Structured according to Morse code patterns; violin, Instructograph, record lathe, and video are utilized to explore rhythmic and tonal possibilities of early transmission and transcribing technologies. Guided by two short films: the 1st focuses on shortwave radio as an artistic medium, and the 2nd explores early transcription technologies and vibration. The conclusion of the performance utilizes audience participation to generate sound, shaping the spatial parameters of the work.
Biography/Filmography:
Monteith McCollum is an inter-media artist working in film, sound, and sculpture. His films have screened at Festivals and Museums including The Museum of Modern Art, Hirshhorn, Wexner Center for the Arts and Festivals including SXSW, Slamdance, Hot Docs, Amsterdam & Osnabruck European Media Arts Festival. His films have garnered dozens of festival awards including an IFP Truer than Fiction Spirit Award. In addition to making films Monteith has consistently been creating unique compositions for films and performances. Compositions are included on the NYFA Fellow CD compilation by Innova. His film and sound work have received support from organizations including New York Foundation for the Arts, Rockefeller Foundation, NEA, Jerome Foundation and Kodak. Recent Audio Visual performances of “Hidden Frequencies” include HallWalls, Fylkingen, in Stockholm Sweden, European Media Arts Festival, and NYU University NY, NY.

A 16mm Projector & Film performance
An alchemist specialising in the precipitation of silver on film, Gaëlle Rouard is one the world’s foremost practitioners of live projection cinema. She manipulates 16mm film projectors, acting directly on the film as it passes through, slowing it down, working with the shutter, with sound and visual manipulation to create subtle improvisational effects, with a deep sensitivity to the space and time of production. Rouard has developed and is still exploring various methods of chemical processing on film, while experimenting with the possibilities of live multi-projection in both solo and collaborative forms.

Biography/Filmography:
Gaelle Rouard has been making handmade films since the early 90’s. She is a long time member of the “102 rue d’Alembert”, a venue dedicated to the diffusion and creation of experimental music and film. She also ran “Atelier MTK” (a craft film laboratory) for twelve years until 2006, in Grenoble, France. An alchemist specialising in the precipitation of silver on film, she has developed and is still exploring various methods of chemical processing on film, while experimenting with the possibilities of live multi-projection in both solo and collaborative forms. Gaelle also runs a variety of workshops, both in art schools and for individual teaching.
