Katharine Fry
Filmmaker
1. What’s your idea of perfect happiness?:
Sprawling in long grass in the sunshine.
2. What drives you to make films?:
A feeling that I can’t quite name that makes its presence known as an image that I must create and then decode.
3. Where in the world would you most like to be right now?:
Floating in a warm sea.
4. When inspiration is waning, and you feel creatively sapped, what do you do to stay motivated?:
Shake it out on a dancefloor. Go for a meandering walk. Re-enter the tunnel of my mind through other people’s work.
5. What films are the most inspiring or influential to you at the moment, and why?:
I love Tony Oursler’s installations, the uncanny stories he makes between people and objects.
Saskia Olde-Wolbers’ hypnotic liquefying sets and dreamlike voiceovers are incredible.
Fabulous artists who fuse feminism with surrealism such as Sarah Pucill and Jayne Parker.
Your top 3 favourite music tracks?:
Running Up That Hill – Kate Bush
All Is Full of Love – Bjork
Moonage Daydream – David Bowie
7. What’s the scariest thing you’ve ever done?:
Change my life to make my dreams my reality.
8. What’s your greatest extravagance?:
Fine dining and ticketed culture
9. What turns you on – creatively, spiritually or emotionally?:
Very different things but all connected by a feeling of light and curiosity.
A final word?
Believe in a generous universe.
P.S. Do you have any favourites or highlights from this year’s Alchemy programme that you’d love to give a shoutout to here?
I loved Rita Tse’s New Woman and Ela Orleans’ work, both her own and with Guy Maddin.
