SHOW AND TELL #26: Karolina Breguła

Karolina Breguła (born 1979) is a visual artist who creates films, installations, happenings and photography. She’s performed and exhibited in places such as the Venice Art Biennale, the Jewish Museum in New York and the National Museum in Warsaw. Karolina lives and works in Warsaw. You will be able to watch her opera musical The Tower in our Features programme.

What is your idea of perfect happiness?
At the moment it’s regular boring life in a world of openness and acceptance.

What lies at the heart of your own desire to make films?
Being able to talk about what bothers me.

What are the first things you do in developing a film idea in response to a subject?
In most cases, having the general idea for a film, I start with finding right places and right faces for my story. Once they are found, I start writing.

What’s your favourite film and why?
It’s changing all the time. If I tell you what my favourite film is today, the answer may already be out of date once you have this questionnaire printed. Recently I’ve been compulsively watching Yasugirō Ozu’s films. Probably because I was planning my own work in Tokyo and I wanted to refresh the old city which doesn’t exist anymore. I really admire Ozu’s quiet narration, his images and his consistency – even if next week my favourite film may already be by a different director 😉

Choose 1, 2 or 3 of your all-time favourite music tracks!
It’s totally impossible to name 1, 2 or even 10 or 20 tracks. There’s so much good music which was important for me at different stages of my life. A few months ago I started learning Chinese and this made me start to listen to a lot of old Taiwanese pop. It’s really cool. I recommend for example Yang Xiao Ping.

What turns you on creatively, spiritually or emotionally?
Morning newspapers, never-ending concrete metropolises and my own non-understanding of things.
